Middle ear infection is the second infection that can be caused by bacteria and viruses. Swelling from either an upper respiratory infection or allergies can block the Eustachian tubes, which would prevent any air from reaching the middle ear. Since the tubes are inflamed and swollen, the fluid cannot drain out. This provides an area for growth of bacteria or a virus, which then leads to the infection in the middle part of the ear.

Symptoms for Middle Ear Infections:

• Ear pain
• Fever
• Drainage from the ear that may be thick and yellow or bloody
• Loss of appetite, vomiting, grumpy behavior
• Trouble sleeping

Lastly is the inner ear infection, which is an inflammation inside the inner ear called labyrinthitis. Labyrinthitis occurs when the labyrinth, a part of the inner ear helps to control your balance ends up getting swollen. The inflammation from this can be caused by respiratory illnesses or viral and bacterial ear infections.

• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Loss of hearing
